It can be: lifelong pain from a finger between the door
It happens to children regularly: a finger trapped in the door, a window, a gate ... It may sound innocent, but it can cause lifelong pain.
Not as innocent as it seems
Plastic surgeons warn parents that this home-garden-and-kitchen accident is not as innocent as it may seem. In some cases it is even so serious that a child can suffer from it all his life, because of chronic pain or an amputation of the finger.
They advise parents to take measures and secure doors against too close. Every year in Britain there are about 30,000 children who get their fingers in the door. More than 1,500 of them must then go under the knife.
The figures come from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. According to the organization, 2 million children under the age of 15 have an accident every year in and around the home that requires medical attention.
With regard to fingers between the door, many accidents occur with self-closing emergency exits, car doors and door hinges. To prevent this, it is advisable to protect doors against slamming.
According to the plastic surgeons, the consequences of these kinds of accidents are seriously underestimated. "You need your hands for everyday activities. Just think of tying your laces, typing, holding a mobile phone or eating. This can be a big challenge. "
Also, a finger or hand between the door can lead to pain in the elbow, migraine and even depression. "A fingertip accident alone can lead to a 20 percent loss of power and can prevent you from joining certain professions."
Have you taken all kinds of safety measures at home to prevent your child from getting a finger trapped in the door?
