Doctors fear increasing numbers with hearing problems

Doctors are afraid that there will be an accelerated increase in people with hearing problems in the coming years. Specialists also notice that more and more young children already suffer from impaired hearing.

According Jan van der Borden, Dutch doctor of the BovenIJ Hospital in Amsterdam, headphones from mobile phones and musical devices are causing rapid deterioration in hearing amongst all ages, but especially the delicate ears of children.

Hearing research

The VUmc in Amsterdam has been conducting hearing examinations for ten years, and report that most people who turn 50 have some form of hearing impairment.

"At this age people are in the middle of life with work and children and can have reduced hearing capacity have a big impact on their lives," said researcher Mariska Stam.

According to the World Health Organization, 360 million people worldwide suffer from hearing loss that limits their everyday life. The National Hearing Foundation announced on World Hearing Day to commit to preventing children and others from losing their hearing prematurely.
