What does your baby hear?
Babies can already hear while they are still in the womb, think of your heartbeat, the rumble of your intestines. Later in the pregnancy, they also hear sounds from outside the womb. From about 28 weeks they can even respond to these sounds. After birth, babies can hear normally. In the first few days the sound for the baby sound a bit muffled, because there is some amniotic fluid in the middle ear. This amniotic fluid is gone after a few days and then the sounds become clearer for your child. It is nice to introduce sound to your child while they're still in the womb, for example a music box. Chances are that your little one will recognize the music when you play it after birth. Babies are fond of classical music, and many children will become quiet when it is played.
What does your baby see?
It is not true that newborn babies only see vague images or shadows. The baby can already see very sharply at a distance of about 20 cm. So if you keep your face close to your child's face, they will certainly see it very sharply. Even when your baby is lying on your chest, it can look at your face. It is still difficult for your baby's eyes to look at longer distances. This is because the eye muscles are not yet strong enough to coordinate the eye movements. This makes that some babies squint. It takes about 6 weeks for the eye muscles to be strong enough to coordinate the eye movements. If the eyes are able to do this, you will see that your baby is generally not squinting anymore. By the time your child reaches their first birthday, it will be able to see just about as much as an adult.
What does your baby smell?
There is no doubt that your baby will recognize you as a mother by your scent. This recognition has been there from the beginning, the baby has already smelled your scent in the womb. Your baby will also be attracted to the smell of your breasts. Do you know that you will be able to recognize your baby from thousands of babies just by smell? The baby has a different smell after birth. This smell has come from the womb. The smell remains for a number of hours to a number of days.
What does your baby taste?
A baby can already 'taste' in the womb. The amniotic fluid tastes sweet, but if you for example have eaten garlic or peppers in your pregnancy, then the smell of this also comes in the amniotic fluid. The amniotic fluid is sweet, as said, which is probably the reason that babies prefer sweet flavors after birth.
