If the results of other prenatal examinations are unclear, an umbilical cord test will be performed. This rarely happens and is therefore not a normal test. The umbilical cord is used only in rare blood diseases or rhesus antagonism, or when a scan has shown that the baby may have a chromosomal aberration. This test is possible from week 18-19 of pregnancy
In this study, the blood of the fetus is examined. A scan determines the correct place for insertion of the needle. Through a thin hollow needle inserted through the abdominal wall and uterus, in the fetal vein of the umbilical cord.
Reasons for umbilical cord puncture
The diagnosis ability of this test is superior to other testing, but must be carried out later in the pregnancy.
