Male Fertility Problems

Getting Pregnant > Fertility > Male Fertility Problems

In most cases of male infertility it is caused by abnormal semen as a result of a low sperm count, decreased sperm mobility, and/or abnormal or misshapen sperm, making it more difficult for them to swim and reach an egg in order to fertilize it.

The testicles are responsible for producing and storing sperm and problems with infections, testicular cancer, surgery, undescended testicles and trauma can seriously affect the quantity and quality of sperm.

Ejaculation disorders can also make it difficult for semen to be able to reach an egg and include retrograde ejaculation where semen is ejaculated into the bladder and premature ejaculation when semen is ejaculated to early and has no chance of reaching an egg.

Hypogonadism causes an abnormally low level of testosterone, the male sex hormone involved in producing sperm and can be as a result of one or more of a number of factors.

Certain drugs such as alcohol and anabolic steroids when taken in large quantities can affect the quality and movement of sperm. Other factors include smoking, stress and weight but as with any fertility problems, an in-depth investigation by your doctor should be able to determine the causes of a low sperm count or poor quality sperm.
