Step Families

Family Matters > Step Families

It isn't always easy to take two families with their own ideas, rules, emotions, lifestyles and blend them together perfectly. As more and more people today are getting divorced and re-married, the help and advice for blended families is abundant.

You can't expect to like everyone in your step-family just as you can't expect all of them to like you. When you are pregnant the door is thrown open for lots of emotions to find their way into your life. Jealousy, insecurity, anger are just a few of the feelings experienced by members of the family on both sides when they discover there is about to be another baby in the mix. The best you can do is make sure that no-one feels left out and that all members of this new blended family feel they are a part of the preparations for this new life.

Children are especially vulnerable at this but talking to them and reassuring them that they are just as important a part of the family as anyone and that they will have a lot of fun and special responsibility for their new brother or sister can help them deal with their insecurities.

I have never seen my step-family as that. I just see them as family.
