X Chromosome - One of the two sex chromosomes The X chromosome determines female characteristics. Males have one X and one Y chromosome, while females have two X chromosomes.
X-Linked Ichthyosis - A recessive genetic defect that affects males. The disorder is charactrized by thick, adherent scales on the skin, which may be present at birth or appear in early infancy. The scales will generally darken as the child gets older and the child will have cataracts.
X-ray Pelvimetry - A more precise method of determing the diameter of the pelvis. Because radiation is used during the procedure, this method should only be used when the potential benefit exceeds the risk of radiation exposure to the fetus.
Xeroderma Pigmentosum - A inherited disorder that causes extreme sensitivity to sunlight and early onset of skin cancers. The condition is rare and effects approximately 1 in 100,000 individuals.
Xeromenia - The occurrence of the usual symptoms of menstruation but occurring without a menstrual blood flow.
Xerostomia - Dry mouth. It is common to have a dry mouth during labor. To help alleviate a dry mouth, it is permissible to suck on ice chips, a lollipop or hard candy between contractions. Sucking on a wet washcloth may also help.
Xerotocia - Labor that occurs after premature rupture of the fetal membranes with loss of almost all of the amniotic fluid.
Xiphopagus - Conjoined, or siamese, twins that are fused in the area of the xiphoid process if the breastbone. The twins almost never share any vital organs, other than the liver.
XXX Syndrome - A birth defect that affects approximately 1 in every 1,000 females. Research shows that approximately 7 girls are born daily with this condition. Each of the baby girl's cells will have an extra X chromosome in it. Generally, the extra chromosome will not cause any major abnormalities for the baby. It is common for the child to be taller than normal and some patients may notice some slight learning disabilities.
Xylitol - A nutritive sweetener that is often used in dietary foods. The sugar is extracted from corn cobs and peanuts and is most commonly used in the production of sugar free sweets. If consumed in moderation, xylitol is considered safe to consume during pregnancy.
