Uterine Septum - A uterine abnormality that occurs during a woman's own prenatal development, in which there is a band of tissue in the middle of a the uterus that causes the uterus to not form properly. Because of the abnormality, women with the condition are at an increased risk of experiencing a miscarriage.
Uterine Souffle - A sound heard over the uterus in late pregnancy that is synchronous with the maternal heartbeat. It is caused by the blood flow through engorged uterine blood vessels and may be heard in nonpregnant females with large tumors of the uterus or enlarged ovaries.
Uterine Tube - The tube that connects the uterus to the ovaries. Responsbile for transporting the egg from the ovary to the uterus. There are two uterine tubes, one on each side of the body. One connects to the right ovary, the other to the left ovary. Fertilization normally occurs within the uterine tubes. Blocked, damaged or scarred uterine tubes are a common cause of infertility in women.
Uteroplacental Adoplexy - A hard, purplish uterus that has lost a great deal of its contractile power. The condition is caused by blood infiltration from a partially detached placenta. The center of the placenta detaches from the uterine wall while the edges remain intact. The result is extensive bleeding.
Uteroplacental Insufficiency - Insufficient amounts of blood flowing to the placenta during pregnancy, which can lead to fetal distress, low levels of amniotic fluid or intrauterine growth restriction.
Uterosacral Ligaments - Major supports for the uterus that attaches the uterus to the sacrum.
Uterotonic Agent - An agent or substance that enhances uterine contractions. The agents can be given to a woman during labor to start or strengthen contractions or after delivery of the placenta to control or reduce the amount of bleeding from the uterus relaxing.
Uterus - A pear-shaped, muscular organ in women that is hollow and thick-walled. The muscle sheds its lining every month during menstruation and conception can occur. Once an egg has been fertilized, it will attach itself to the lining of the uterus so that an embryo can develop into a fetus.
UTI - Urinary Tract Infection. A common occurence during pregnancy. A UTI occurs when the urinary tract becomes inflammed. When bacteria enters the urinary tract, it can become infected. This can happen during sexual intercourse, improper wiping techniques, the placement of a catheter or simply because of the changes in the urinary tract during pregnancy. As your uterus grows, it sits on the bladder and does not the bladder to completely empty, which can lead to an infection. If the UTI is not caught in time, it can lead to a kidney infection. While a urinary tract infection itself will not harm your developing baby, a kidney infection can. A kidney infection can lead to preterm labor.
