Lunar Hymen - A hymen in which a crescent shape is formed above or below the vaginal opening. This occurs as a female begins experimenting with sexual activities or object insertion.
Luteal Phase Defect - A shortened luteal phase or one with inadequate progesterone production. There are two types of luteal phase problems that fall under the category of LPD. One is a short luteal phase -- 10 days or less. The second is when the length of the phase is not necessarily shorter than the standard 12-16 days, but it is out of phase and progesterone production is low. Typical treatment is to enhance ovulation and/or to use hCG or progesterone support after ovulation.
Luteinized Unruptured Follicle Syndrome - A condition in which the follicle develops and changes into the corpus luteum without releasing the egg. This is commonly seen when an LH surge is not followed by ovulation. The condition can be confirmed with ultrasound and may account for 5-30% of women with unexplained infertility.
Luteinizing Hormone - A hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that triggers ovulation and stimulates the corpus luteum to secrete progesterone. Ovulation tests measure the surge of the hormone to determine what time ovulation will occur.
Luteinizing Hormone Surge - The quick rise of luteinizing hormone (LH) that causes the follicle to release a mature egg. The LH surge usually occurs in the middle of the cycle.
Luteoma - Rare and noncancerous nodules developed in the ovary that are made up of lutein cells. When occuring during pregnancy, luteoma is usually developed during the third trimester and goes away after childbirth.
