Stress incontinence is more common in women and causes urine to leak when laughing or coughing. Urge incontinence is caused by urinary muscle spasms that cause an urgency to urinate. Multiple pregnancies, being overweight, and genetic weaknesses in the mucles can also cause incontinence.

Back to top Incontinentia Pigmenti - A disorder in which the skin develops a discoloration within the first six weeks of life. A baby's skin will have a marbled appearance in grey, blue or brown tints and will usually be found on the trunk or limbs. Generally, the pattern of development includes blisters that are present at birth or develop in the first six weeks, changing to a rough wart appearance and ending in a swirled pattern of discoloration. Other common symptoms include cerebral atrophy, delays in motor development, muscle weakness, seizures, mental retardation, crossed eyes, cataracts, vision loss and dental complications. Research has shown that the cause is a mutation in one of the genes and males will suffer more severe cases than females. A doctor can diagnose the condition during a physical examination. Generally, the skin discolorations will go away on their own, so no treatment is necessary. However, the other symptoms of the condition should be treated as needed for the individual.

Back to top Incoordinate Uterine Dysfunction - An elevated tone of the uterus that generally occurs in the latent phase of labor. The condition causes frequent and intense contractions, but they are not effective. This may be caused by the mid segment of the uterus contracting with such a force that is greater than the fundus or a lack of nerve impulse synchronization.

The disease affects the motor nerve cells of the spinal cord which cause floppiness and paralysis of muscles. Most affected children will die before the age of three years.
